What Is Electrical Design?

Electrical design is the technical planning of a building’s electrical systems. It determines how electricity will be distributed, controlled, and used throughout a structure—safely, efficiently, and in line with current regulations.

A well-executed electrical design includes:

  • Power distribution plans
  • Lighting layouts (including emergency lighting)
  • Fire and security system integration
  • Data, communication, and smart system wiring
  • Energy load calculations and circuit protection
  • Coordination with other trades and services

Electrical design is not just wiring diagrams—it’s the strategic backbone of your entire electrical infrastructure.

Who Needs Electrical Design?

Any project involving significant electrical work needs a robust electrical design—especially if you want to stay on budget, avoid installation errors, and pass inspections smoothly.

We work with:

  • Architects & Interior Designers – To ensure lighting, socket locations, and smart features are integrated into the early stages of design.
  • Property Developers – To produce full electrical schematics for residential blocks, commercial buildings, or mixed-use sites.
  • Main Contractors – To deliver electrical design drawings and specifications for accurate quoting and installation.
  • Facilities Managers & Business Owners – Looking to upgrade or reconfigure existing systems in commercial premises.

Whether you’re starting from scratch or modifying an existing building, proper design sets the stage for everything else.

Can’t recommend Ivan highly enough. From the moment I called and asked for him to come round and see if my place was suitable for an EV charger, to weeks after it was completed, he has been brilliant. They come round same day and checked if the distance was suitable from my electric meter, luckily it was, Ivan got back to me the next day with quotes for different options that would work, it was completed the next week. I work all over the place and am difficult to tie down to an appointment but they were very accommodating and got the job done when I was able to be there. It looks so good that you would think that it was installed when the building was built. Ivan has been available to speak with for weeks after when I had questions about changing stuff with my energy supplier too. As I said, couldn’t recommend high enough. A+++

What is involved in the testing and certification process after installation?2025-09-22T19:30:20+00:00

Once the installation is complete based on our design, our qualified electricians conduct rigorous testing as required by BS 7671. This includes checks for earth fault loop impedance, insulation resistance, polarity, and RCD (Residual Current Device) operation. Upon successful testing, we provide the client with essential certification, such as an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) and a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate, which are crucial for insurance, warranty, and legal purposes.

Can you coordinate your electrical design with other building services, like HVAC and plumbing?2025-09-22T19:30:04+00:00

Absolutely. Coordination is vital to avoid clashes where, for example, an electrical conduit is planned to run through the same space as a plumbing pipe or HVAC duct. We work closely with other trades and use detailed drawings to ensure all services are routed efficiently and safely within the building’s fabric, saving time and preventing installation problems on-site.

How do you future-proof an electrical design?2025-09-22T19:29:46+00:00

We future-proof designs by anticipating growth and technological change. This includes:

  • Spare Capacity: Installing distribution boards with spare ways for future circuits.

  • Enhanced Power Outlets: Providing extra circuits and data points to accommodate new workstations or equipment.

  • Dedicated Circuits: Planning for future needs like EV charging stations, additional air conditioning, or security systems.

  • Robust Data Infrastructure: Installing high-quality, scalable structured cabling to support evolving IT and communication technologies.

What is the difference between a single-phase and three-phase power supply, and which does my commercial property need?2025-09-22T19:29:28+00:00
  • Single-Phase Power: Uses one alternating current (AC) waveform and is standard for smaller residential properties and very small commercial units with minimal power demands (e.g., a small shop with lighting and till points).

  • Three-Phase Power: Uses three simultaneous AC waveforms, delivering a more consistent and powerful supply. It is essential for most commercial and industrial properties to run heavy machinery, large HVAC systems, commercial kitchens, and high-density IT server rooms efficiently.

What is included in a typical electrical design package from Elsys Electrical Ltd?2025-09-22T19:29:08+00:00

Our complete design package provides all the documentation needed for pricing, installation, and certification. It typically includes:

  • Detailed Layout Drawings: Showing the location of all outlets, lights, switches, and distribution boards.

  • Single-Line Diagrams: A schematic overview of the entire electrical distribution system.

  • Specification Schedules: Listing all required materials, fixtures, and equipment.

  • Load Calculations: Demonstrating that the design can safely handle the projected electrical demand.

  • Cable Sizing and Circuit Design: Ensuring all components are correctly rated.

How does good electrical design contribute to energy efficiency and sustainability?2025-09-22T19:28:38+00:00

An intelligent electrical design is a core component of a sustainable building. We focus on:

  • Efficient Lighting Design: Specifying high-efficiency LED fixtures with smart controls like motion sensors, daylight dimming, and timed zoning.

  • Power Distribution Efficiency: Ensuring circuits are balanced and cables are correctly sized to minimise energy loss.

  • Integration of Renewables: Designing systems for technologies like Solar PV panels and EV charging points from the outset.
This not only reduces your carbon footprint but also significantly lowers your electricity bills.

What key regulations does an electrical design need to comply with in the UK?2025-09-22T19:28:17+00:00

All our designs are fully compliant with the latest UK regulations, primarily:

  • BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations, 18th Edition): The fundamental standard for all electrical installation work.

  • Building Regulations: Including Part B (Fire Safety), Part L (Conservation of Fuel and Power), Part P (Electrical Safety – Dwellings), and Part R (Physical Infrastructure for High-Speed Electronic Communications Networks).

  • Electricity at Work Regulations 1989: Governing safety in commercial environments.

  • Specific British Standards: Such as BS 5266 for emergency lighting and BS 5839 for fire alarm systems.

At what stage in a project should we involve an electrical designer?2025-09-22T19:27:41+00:00

The earlier, the better. Ideally, you should involve us during the initial planning or conceptual design phase, alongside your architect and M&E (Mechanical & Electrical) consultants. Early involvement allows us to integrate the electrical requirements seamlessly into the building’s design, identify potential issues before construction begins, and ensure that necessary space (like for distribution boards and cable routes) is allocated correctly. This proactive approach avoids expensive and time-consuming changes later.

What exactly is electrical design, and why is it so important for our commercial project?2025-09-22T19:27:04+00:00

Electrical design is the comprehensive process of planning, specifying, and documenting the electrical systems for a building. It’s much more than just deciding where plugs go; it involves calculating power demands, designing safe circuit layouts, selecting the right equipment, and ensuring full compliance with regulations. For a commercial project, it’s critical because a poor design can lead to safety hazards, power failures, failed inspections, costly rework, and inefficient energy use that increases your long-term operational costs.
