Solar Battery EV Charging Module Installation

This project involves the seamless integration of three key technologies into a single, unified home energy system:

  1. Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Array: High-efficiency panels mounted on the roof to capture sunlight and convert it into DC electricity.
  2. Battery Storage Unit: A high-capacity lithium-ion battery Synergy installed indoors. This stores excess solar energy generated during the day for use during peak evening hours or grid outages.
  3. Smart EV Charger: A dedicated Type-2 charging point Zappi  installed on the driveway or garage wall, wired to draw power intelligently from either the solar/battery system or the grid.

The Goal: To maximise self-consumption of renewable energy, reduce reliance on the National Grid, significantly cut household energy bills, and provide a low-cost, green fueling solution for electric vehicles.

Expert Insights

Why Integration Matters:
Standalone solar panels often export up to 60% of their generated energy back to the grid for low export rates. By adding a battery and an EV charger, we create a “closed-loop” system that utilises that energy in-house. For every unit of solar energy you store and use to charge your car, you save approximately £0.30-£0.40 compared to buying that unit from the grid.

Key Technical Considerations:

  • Load Balancing: We carefully calculate your home’s peak demand and your EV’s charging speed (typically 7kW) to ensure the system does not exceed the property’s main fuse capacity (usually 60A-100A).
  • CT Clamp Positioning: The installation relies on a crucial Current Transformer (CT) clamp placed on the mains incoming cable. This allows the battery to “see” grid import/export and discharge accordingly, preventing you from accidentally charging the battery from the grid (unless tariff-optimised).
  • DNO Notification: Any battery system over 3.68kW (single-phase) requires prior notification to your Distribution Network Operator (DNO). We manage this G98/G99 application on your behalf to ensure full grid compliance.

Regulatory Compliance:
All work adheres to BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations 18th Edition) , MCS 001 standards for solar installation, and PAS 1899:2022 for EV charging equipment. The battery must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s fire safety clearances and the Building Regulations (Approved Document B) regarding fire detection.

Installation Process

Step 1: Pre-Installation Survey & System Design

  • We conduct a physical site survey to assess roof structural integrity, orientation (pitch/azimuth), and shading analysis.
  • We evaluate your consumer unit (fuse board) capacity and earthing arrangements to determine if a consumer unit upgrade or a dedicated EV sub-board is required.
  • We design the system using PV modelling software to predict annual generation and map out the cable routes from the roof to the inverter/battery location, and finally to the EV charger position.

Step 2: Scaffolding & Panel Mounting

  • We erect HSE-compliant scaffolding to ensure safe roof access.
  • Roof hooks are secured to the rafters, and aluminium mounting rails are installed horizontally. Panels are clamped to the rails using mid-clamps and end-clamps.

Step 3: Electrical Infrastructure & DC Wiring

  • DC cables (4mm² or 6mm²) are routed from the panels to the inverter location via DC isolators.
  • The hybrid inverter is mounted on the wall, converting DC solar power to AC for the home.
  • The battery unit is installed adjacent to the inverter, connected via a dedicated power/data cable for BMS (Battery Management System) communication.

Step 4: AC Integration & EV Charger Installation

  • The EV charger is mounted on an external wall, fitted with its own Type A/RCD protection and an isolation switch.
  • AC supply cables are run from the consumer unit to both the hybrid inverter and the EV charger, ensuring the CT clamp is installed on the main meter tails to monitor grid import/export.

Step 5: Commissioning & Handover

  • The system is energised, and we test all protective devices (RCDs/MCBs) for correct tripping times.
  • We log into the monitoring platform, pair the battery, EV charger, and inverter via Wi-Fi/Ethernet, and configure the battery’s operational logic (e.g., “Self-Consumption” or “Time-of-Use” modes).
  • We issue your MCS certificate, DNO confirmation letter, and provide a live demonstration of the smartphone app to show your real-time generation, storage, and EV charging data.
