Installing PV Panels

Bushey is an ideal location for solar energy generation. With its elevated position in Hertfordshire and a mix of period and modern detached properties, homes in Bushey benefit from excellent roof space and minimal shading. We specialise in installing bespoke solar PV systems tailored to the unique architecture of Bushey’s housing stock, helping homeowners reduce their energy bills and carbon footprint while increasing property value. From the initial site survey through to MCS certification, our experienced team manages every aspect of your solar installation with minimal disruption to your home.

Overview

This project involves the design and installation of a high-efficiency solar photovoltaic (PV) system on a residential property in Bushey, Hertfordshire. Bushey’s housing stock ranges from Victorian and Edwardian villas to 1930s detached homes and modern developments, each presenting unique opportunities and challenges for solar installation. Our scope includes roof mounting, DC/AC electrical wiring, inverter installation, and full system commissioning. The system is designed to seamlessly integrate with the property’s existing electrical infrastructure, maximising energy generation and delivering significant long-term savings.

Expert Insights

Why Bushey is Ideal for Solar:
Bushey enjoys a favourable microclimate due to its elevated position, which can result in slightly higher solar irradiance compared to lower-lying areas in Hertfordshire. The town’s abundance of detached and semi-detached properties with generous roof areas makes it particularly well-suited for solar PV installations.

Key Technical Considerations for Bushey Properties:

  • Heritage and Conservation Areas: Parts of Bushey, particularly around the High Street and historic Old Bushey, fall within conservation areas. Properties in these zones may have restrictions on roof-mounted equipment. We conduct thorough planning checks and advise on permitted development rights before any work begins.
  • Roof Diversity: Bushey features a mix of roof types, including traditional clay tiles, slate, and modern concrete tiles. We carry a comprehensive inventory of mounting solutions to suit every roof type without compromising the integrity of the covering.
  • Tree Coverage: Many properties in Bushey benefit from mature gardens with significant tree cover. We use advanced shading analysis software to identify potential obstructions and optimise panel placement to minimise their impact on generation.
  • Scaffolding Requirements: Detached and semi-detached properties require full perimeter scaffolding. We include this in the project scope and coordinate access with neighbouring properties where necessary.
  • Earthing and Surge Protection: Properties in elevated areas like Bushey can be more exposed to lightning strikes. We install appropriate surge protection devices (SPDs) and ensure the PV array is correctly earthed to comply with BS 7671.

Regulatory Compliance:
All installations adhere to BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations 18th Edition) , MCS 001 standards, and Building Regulations (Approved Document P) . We handle all DNO (Distribution Network Operator) G98/G99 notifications for systems over 3.68kW.

Installation Process

Step 1: Initial Consultation & Site Survey

  • We visit your Bushey property to assess roof orientation, pitch, and structural condition.
  • We conduct a detailed shading analysis using industry-standard software to model generation potential throughout the year.
  • We review your current energy consumption (via bills or smart meter data) and discuss future plans (battery storage, EV charging, heat pumps) to right-size the system.
  • We check planning and conservation area constraints and advise accordingly.

Step 2: System Design & DNO Notification

  • We create a bespoke panel layout that maximises available roof space while maintaining safe access for maintenance and complying with fire safety regulations (firefighter access zones).
  • We select Tier-1 monocrystalline panels and a high-quality inverter (string with optimisers or microinverters, depending on shading).
  • We submit the G98 or G99 application to the local DNO (UK Power Networks for the Bushey area) and await approval before proceeding.

Step 3: Scaffolding Erected & Roof Preparation

  • HSE-compliant scaffolding is erected around the property, ensuring safe working access to all roof areas.
  • Any roof tiles or slates that are damaged or deteriorated are identified and replaced prior to mounting.
  • Roof hooks or mounting brackets are securely fixed to the rafters or trusses using structural fixings.

Step 4: Rail Mounting & Panel Installation

  • Aluminium mounting rails are installed horizontally across the roof at calculated intervals.
  • High-efficiency monocrystalline solar panels are clamped to the rails using mid-clamps and end-clamps.
  • DC cables (typically 4mm² or 6mm²) are connected from the panels and routed to the inverter location via DC isolators.

Step 5: Inverter Mounting & Electrical Wiring

  • The inverter is mounted on a suitable internal wall (garage, utility room, or loft) in a well-ventilated location.
  • DC cables are connected to the inverter input, and AC cables are run from the inverter output to the property’s consumer unit (fuse board).
  • A generation meter is installed to track total energy produced.
  • All cabling is secured with appropriate trunking or conduit to meet fire safety standards.

Step 6: System Commissioning & Handover

  • The system is energised, and we perform comprehensive testing of all protective devices (RCDs, MCBs, surge protection).
  • We verify the inverter’s performance, confirm Wi-Fi/ethernet connectivity, and set up the monitoring platform.
  • We register your installation with the MCS and provide you with your MCS certificate, which enables you to benefit from the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG).
  • We provide a full handover pack including warranties, user manuals, and a live demonstration of the monitoring app.
